Can Athletes Benefit from Heat Therapy?
Athletes spend several hours and days per week to train. They undergo rigid exercise routines to optimise their performance. Hence, their bodies are worked out, which can sometimes cause pain, muscle spasms, and even injuries. For this reason, athletes also have therapy sessions to make them feel better, especially before a tournament. One of the most popularly used methods to treat sports injuries is heat therapy or thermotherapy.
One of the compelling benefits of heat therapy is that it reduces pain and stiffness in the muscles as well as joint pains. As a result, it decreases the pain while it promotes blood flow to the area that needs healing. This type of therapy is best used on chronic injuries as well as in late stage acute injuries. It can also be used before exercise or before athletes begin each training session to warm up the muscles. This can be done by using heat packs that can be heated in a microwave or submerged in hot water. Alternatively, a towel that is heated can be applied to the injured area 15 to 20 minutes at a time. However, this should not be done after working out or when the injuries are inflamed or swollen.
To use heat before working out or training, athletes or those who play sports can go to the gym then stay in a room and turn on the heating system like a radiator or fireplace. The heat from these devices will help relax the muscles and improve circulation to prepare the body for the strenuous activity.
